St. Johns' Episcopal Church Lancaster, Ohio
Kathy Heim, Choirmaster, is a "Cradle Episcopalian"
who has been involved in church music since she was nine years old and has been a member of St. Johns' since 2007.
In addition to her duties at St. Johns', she operates a private music studio teaching piano and voice, and she is a
soprano with the Lancaster Chorale. Kathy received her BA in Music Education from the University of Alabama in
Huntsville. Prior to relocating to Ohio, she was music director at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Huntsville,
Alabama. Other past positions include Associate Director of the Huntsville Community Children's Chorus, Children's
Choir Director at First Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, and Music Teacher at UAW Chrysler Daycare. Kathy also
introduced the Kindermusik program to Huntsville, starting the first Kindermusik studio in the area. She is a past
member of the University of Alabama in Huntsville Concert and Chamber Choirs, Village Singers, Nashville Symphony
Chorus, Huntsville Community Chorus, Huntsville Schola Cantorum, The Bach Consort, and a founding member of
Vox Angelica. Kathy has served as housemaster at RSCM summer courses, music leader for dicocesan spirituality
retreats (Alabama) and is a member of the Voice Care Network. She also enjoys composing for her students and choirs.
Recent compositions include a Requiem service and an Anthem written especially for the Choir of St. Johns'. Kathy is a
member of the "Daughters of the King," a graduate of the EfM program and is the St. Johns' group mentor.
Laura Davis, soprano, has been
a member of St. Johns' for almost a decade and has considered it her home parish through frequent moves. She has been singing in choirs for as long as she can remember and especially enjoys old church music. Her favorite composers include Henry Purcell, Thomas Tallis, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Michaeli Miller (Mikki), soprano, grew up in the Episcopal Church, in which she was an active member, with choral activities being one of her greatest passions. She moved to Lancaster in February of 2009 and joined the choir under the direction of Kathy Heim, her mother. Mikki had previously sung with choir on several occasions while visiting her mother, and has been an active member of St. Johns' for over a year. She recently took over layout of the Sunday bulletin and insert(s). She is married to Jason Miller, who also attends St. Johns' and sings in the Choir.
Susan Snyder, soprano, grew up in Manassas, Virginia and graduated
from Stonewall Jackson Senior High School. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from The College of
William and Mary, and a Master of Science degree in Geology from Emory University. Her master's thesis focused
on paleontology and geology. She has worked for US EPA, Ohio EPA and as an environmental consultant and trainer.
Susan always wanted to be a teacher, so she went back to school in 2002 for her teaching license in 7th to 12th
grade Integrated Science. This is her fourth year teaching Biology 1, Earth Science, and Physical Science at
Bloom Carroll High School. Susan was proud to be a member of the youth choir in her church starting at a very young age.
She has enjoyed being a member of the choir at every church that she has belonged to throughout her life. She began
singing with the St. Johns' choir in 2006, although she has been a member of St. Johns' since 2004. She has
made many friends in the St. Johns' choir and looks forward to many more years.
Wanita Burton, alto, has been a member of St. Johns' for nearly 25 years.
Originally from Iowa with Presbyterian roots, music has been a part of her entire life at home, in church and in school,
both vocally and instrumentally. She succeeded Marion Carr's amazing tenure as Jr. Choir leader at St. Johns' for about
12 years and currently is content with her role as a chorister in the Sr. Choir, given her full time private
psychotherapy practice and part time teaching responsibilities at OUL. Any gifts she brings to St. Johns' musically
are directly attributable to director and organist Emeritus Bill Clausen and our supremely talented Kathy Heim,
choirmaster.
Robin Harris, alto, is a cradle Episcopalian and has been a member of
St. Johns' since 1986 when her family moved to Lancaster to begin their Pediatric practice. She is a native of
Roanoke Virginia, and lived in Toronto Canada and the suburbs of Philadelphia before going to University of Virginia
and Eastern Virginia Medical School. She did her Pediatric training in the Navy and rose to the rank of Lt Commander
when stationed at Orlando Naval Hospital where their first child, Tyler, was born. Kenton was born in Winchester
Virginia just 2 months before they came to Lancaster. At St Johns' Robin has been a Sunday School teacher for 10 years,
a member of the choir for 20 years; was assistant director of the junior choir; is currently a Lay Reader and Lector,
and recently completed a term on the Vestry.
Helen Joy Malinski, alto, after graduation from UBC in Vancouver with the
degree of BSP (Pharmacy), came to Windsor, Ontario, a border city to Detroit, where she met and married Tadeusz
Malinski. In 2000 her husband received a chair at OU Athens and they moved to Old Town Lancaster in 200l.
In 1999, Joy took the National Dance Council of America exams to teach ballroom dancing and now enjoys performing in
showcases. The next is May 1st In Columbus where she will do three numbers. Until the age of 12 Joy attended an
Anglican girls school directed by nuns so now as a member of St. Johns' Episcopal Church she is back to her
roots.
Paul Heim, tenor, has been a member of St. Johns' choir since relocating to Lancaster in 2007. He has no experience singing with adult choirs before 2007, having not participated in church music since the age of 9. He is a well-heeled middle-aged gentleman with a droll sense of humor, an engineer by profession and enjoys listening to music, motorcycling, cooking and home improvement projects.
Carl K. Roshong, bass, started singing 60 years ago at age 11 in a men
and boys choir at St Paul's Episcopal Church, Canton Ohio. Sang off and on at St Johns' Lancaster since 1966.
Directed the children's choir under David Balthazer for several years in the mid seventies. Like Jack Nicholson said,
"I'm back!"
Ivan C. Smith, bass, is a professional singer, having received the grand sum of $2.50 per month in the late forties and early fifties while a boy soprano in the men and boys choir of St. John's Episcopal Church, Youngstown. Worth noting is the fact that nobody has ever paid him anything for singing since then, though he has been singing in one choir or another continuously for the past sixty-five years. Also noteworthy, in a far more serious vein, is that joining the St. John's, Youngstown choir, which occurred much against Ivan's better judgment, was a truly life-changing event.
Ivan has served on the Board of Directors of the Lancaster Chorale for several years and is a past president of that organization. As president, he was instrumental in bringing the Lancaster Fairfield Youth Choir into the Chorale organization.
Though not a member of Chorale, Ivan has been privileged to perform with that organization on three different occasions during the past several years.
Ivan is a life-long Episcopalian. He and his wife, Jessie, have been members of St. Johns' since relocating in Lancaster in 1980.
